I watched Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. Amazing performance, beautiful music, and a cool storyline. Manirathnam has got together a great team. However, Manirathnam in his goal to follow some kind of formula has lost his authenticity. Manipulative scenes and it just doesn't flow for me. I hope to see the old Manirathnam without pretense soon! Right now, Manirathnam is a good project manager who lost his authenticity along the way. AR Rahman is still in his divine ordained zone. This song haunts me.
If he believes that the women in the movie are supposedly the bearers of empowerment, it can't be further from the truth. It starts with the very first scene where Jeyasudha makes sarcastic jokes about her husband's indiscretions as a way of life. Then, we have Jyothika who knows about her husband's girlfriend but is loyal to a fault and is ready to die for him though she is not too happy about the situation. Of course, the thaali sentiment is thrown in, albeit carelessly. When the girlfriend meets the wife, Mani tries too hard to establish that she is from a 'good family' with an engineer sis and a Doctor in the family and the fact that she is not financially benefitting from this scenario.
Why are all these women, including the girlfriend into monogamy when their men are not. If you are not okay with it, don't tolerate it. But if you are, why make that concession only for the husband. That's quite a mystry. Most mainstream movies when they address polygamy/polyamor as a romantic scenario are only about polygyny.
